Project Overview

The Fangcun – Baiyun Airport Intercity Railway (Fangbai Intercity) is a vital transportation link in the Greater Bay Area, connecting downtown Guangzhou to the International Airport. Sunward’s high-quality TBM equipment has provided strong support for the “Civil Engineering Section 7,” which was recently recognized by Guangzhou Metro Group for its outstanding performance.

Targeted Engineering Solutions

The project faced unprecedented challenges, including small-radius curves and steep slopes, often described as tunneling in “Water Tofu” (extremely soft geological environments). To overcome this, Sunward’s R&D team developed:

  • Shuttle-type Shield: A unique structure with a large front and small rear to ensure sufficient swing space during tight turns.
  • Optimized Geometry: Shortened main engine length and increased excavation diameter to maintain stability even after tool wear.
  • Intelligent Systems: Equipped with advanced geological radar, water drilling, and pre-treatment systems for 24-hour safety monitoring.

Tunneling through dense building groups posed a “group-level risk” of settlement. In collaboration with China Construction Fourth Engineering Division, Sunward implemented a rigorous 24-hour shift system combined with automatic monitoring and karst cave reinforcement, ensuring zero damage to urban infrastructure.
